I don't get all the fake outrage about this. If you don't care about R.Kelly, don't buy the damn book. The fact is he has MILLIONS of fans who forgive past misdeeds. Nobody is perfect and why shouldn't Tavis, a good brother who has done a lot of good in the community, profit instead of white ppl exploiting it. People need to get over it. Why should this define the rest of his life if he has truly learned from his mistake. So damn hypocritical! Kells has always been open about his struggles to balance trying to be righteous vs the negative environment he grew up in. A lot of people like myself relate to that. If you ain't feeling it, who cares. If it is coming out, I'll be the first to buy it!

A Shame!! American, who PRETEND to be a CHRISTIAN nation. That's the JOKER!!! George Bush tried to Change the Constitution hundreds of times and succeed with the PATRIOT ACT! This PRESIDENT inherited the MESS from the PREVIOUS Administration.
It is impossible for Americans to admit their RACIST VIEWS. Other countries are watching these attacks on African Americans and we ask China to review their HUMAN RIGHTS!!
I am ASHAMED of America and its people who will not say "ENOUGH ALREADY."

Thank you for this. My friend Michelle posted it on her YouTube page and I came here to read it as soon as I saw it. I think of Helen (and Paul and Poppy and Rosie) often and thought of her yesterday when I saw a picture of her on a "remembering New Orleans friends who have gone" page. Helen was fascinating (I think) she understood human nature and its foibles and celebrated them back to all of us. New Orleanians took to her because she gave out joy with both hands, which is the New Orleans chief emotion writ large. The Society of Saint Ann marches on Mardi Gras Day and at the end, remembrances are tossed into the Mississippi River of departed friends. Helen is always remembered on this day and many, many others.

You make the City seem full of adventures; like vignettes from an old black and white movie, like the dream city it's pumped up to be, like magic in coincidence. Thanks, F.

Sounds like a great day and a great story, if you wrote it to make the reader feel as if they were there...mission accomplished. Have enjoyed your work in the media for awhile and with social media have been able to exchange thoughts with you online i.e. twitter.

AkaziaJ,

I focused on that because I didn't have anything to add about the screwed-upness of what he said about women generally. It was the only place I could find to cut him any slack. I'm not sure whether it's misogyny or general misanthropy or narcissism or what inside his head that's driving, but the effects aren't pretty at all.

I'm amazed at the fact that the focus has been placed on JM's use of the word nigger. Yes, I said it.(To use the "n" word makes it no less offensive). I think this young man has some serious issues with women and not just black women. Women. On more than one occasion he has made misogynistic comments. I hope after this latest rant that women will be just as discriminating as he is by not allowing him into their vaginas.

What is even more worrisome is the fact that someone who I assume to be very talented based on his commercial success, did not learn a sense of appropriateness either at home or in his professional grooming.

How could someone with so much at stake be so reckless in an era where nothing is private and information is out in cyberspace the second it leaves your month. Maybe he has the "celebrity syndrome" that makes one think they can say and do whatever. SMH.

It is my hope that JM will learn from this experience and be a better man and person for it.

To all the post-racial folk out there, trust, just because someone collaborates on a song doesn't mean they respect you. Remember slaveholders left their children (supposedly their most prized possessions) in the hands of the same people that they beat, raped and stole from their homeland.
