Kiss the Sky has a 90 song playlist of music I reference, everything from “Unloveable” by the Smiths to the “Negro National Anthem.” I just shared it on imeem.

Thanks to BoldAsLove.us, I got to witness some of the best creativity in Black Rock and do a reading with a musical flourish. As part of the Northside Festival in Williamsburg, Brooklyn (a neighborhood whose motto should be “Love Me, Love My Amp”), Rob Fields of BoldAsLove.us coordinated a Kiss the Sky event with four Black Rock Bands, all very different, all amazing.
Here’s a bit of me reading at the event:
And here’s some rockaliciousness from Shelley Nicole’s blaKbushe:

***************** TWITIZEN IRAN ********
I’m primarily focused on the book tour right now, but I wanted to share this piece I wrote several days ago on Twittering the #IranElections, ahead of the curve of folks talking about it now.
Iran + Twitter = Trust But Don’t Verify
People had some strong reactions, both on the HuffPost site and in its repost on Facebook.

To recap:
“Kiss the Sky” is about the battle of a black rock star to overcome her demons (including self-doubt, religious conundrums, drinking, and bad choices about men) and make a comeback. You’ll met her friends and family from Harvard and Baltimore; the two very different but deeply flawed men she’s torn between; and travel with her and her band from New York to the Midwest and the South; from London to Paris to South Africa’s Joburg and Durban.
How to buy “Kiss the Sky”
It’s just about everywhere, and your store has sold out, just ask and they’ll order it.
Online, folks have used this link to buy from Amazon for traditional paper books and Kindle sales, or go to Barnes & Noble, to indie online/offline seller Powell’s or walk into ANY of your fine neighborhood independent stores.

A Tribute
I want to give thanks to a woman who graced me with her friendship: Edith Speed. She founded a group called–yes, quite a title–Bowling for Boobies. (It’s going national so look out for it and please enjoy raising money by hefting a ball.) She used her experience with breast cancer to help others, and she left this earth this month. I’ll miss you, Edith. But to all you out there, I want to share something Edith wrote about her journey. She says in part:
Let me remind you once again to do those things you’ve always wanted to do, to treasure your life, friends and family. Make sure they know you love them. Call someone right now and tell them.
Edith’s life and death are a great example to me about how creativity does not heal all wounds, but it does bear witness to how we walk the earth.
